10 Natural Ways to Strengthen Your Immune System

A resilient immune system isn't built overnight. Rather, it's built over time on a foundation of small, consistent habits. The human immune system can be quite complicated, and as Functional Medicine specialists, TCIM takes a whole-person approach to immunity, simplifying the best approaches in nutrition, lifestyle, and targeted support.

Here are 10 natural habits that can help your body defend itself, day after day.

Start with the 5 Pillars of Health

You may remember the first five suggestions; these are the "5 Pillars of Health" we refer to often at TCIM (1). Mastering these aspects of health forms the basis for resiliency!

  1. Sleep: Restorative sleep gives your body time to heal and fortify itself, which is important for immune function. Good sleep also helps regulate various hormones that impact immunity.

  2. Movement: Moderate, consistent exercise stimulates immune function and helps reduce inflammation. This can be as easy as daily walks!

  3. Nutrition: Adequate nutrition helps prevent malnutrition, considered to be the most common cause of immune deficiency.

  4. Stress management: Managing chronic stress protects your immune response directly.  Unmanaged stress increases the hormone cortisol in ways that can suppress immunity over time (2).

  5. Strong relationships: Healthy long-term relationships promote emotional stability and physical resilience. Having a supportive social network can actually increase longevity!

5 More Ways to Boost Immunity

  1. Get sunshine or take Vitamin D3: Nearly every immune cell carries Vitamin D receptors, and D3 helps activate them (3)!

  2. Load up on antioxidants, especially Vitamin C: Adequate Vitamin C intake can reduce the severity and duration of upper respiratory infections, including the common cold (4).

  3. Support your gut: Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, pickles, and yogurt increase microbial diversity in the intestines, which can help regulate immune responses (5).

  4. Limit alcohol and avoid smoking: Both habits present a burden to the body, robbing the metabolic energy that could be used for fighting off infection.

  5. Get enough zinc: Zinc is essential for immune cell communication (called signaling). Zinc deficiency can leave the body less able to respond to immune system assaults (6).

At TCIM, we take the long view, helping you build daily habits that support a stronger, more reliable immune system. Whether it's a personalized supplement plan, an IV Therapy, or a comprehensive Executive Physical, our healthcare providers combine deep experience with customized, achievable plans.

Let's build your resilience together, one habit at a time.
